How To Treat IBS With Hypnosis, by Stewart Hare
23 Feb 2008

Since ancient times, hypnosis has been utilized to cure the mind, body and soul to free it from illnesses and stress linked to day-to-day life. Communicating with the mind on a subconscious level using hypnotherapy changes the way a person consciously deals with illnesses as well as encouraging new ways of responding to them that are better for the body and in turn making them better for the individual involved.

Most digestive disorders can be successfully cured with this method, including IBS. This condition can quickly be triggered by an over load of stress, so what better method to treat IBS then by relaxing the mind and soul while curing the body?

While most see an irritable bowel as a disease, it is actually a dysfunctional relationship between the brain and bowel. This interaction influences the way a sufferer interprets pain by lowering their threshold or intensifying it, as well as decreasing the movement within their gastrointestinal tract. Imaging scans of the brain, such as PET and MRI, of both normal patients and irritable bowel symptom sufferers show marked differences in the way stimulus from the digestive tract is processed within the brain and how pain is perceived by the brain.

Hypnosis and self-hypnosis give a window of opportunity to help sufferers treat IBS for a couple of reasons. As a stress-related disorder, in that stress can trigger painful spasms in the gut, a session with a hypnotherapist will help encourage relaxation from daily tensions.

It also educates the sufferer ways of reducing and coping with IBS-related pains of nearly any strength. A long-term benefit of this treatment is that it encourages new ways to reduce day-to-day stress by programming the subconscious with positive responses to stress triggers in order to lower the level of stress the body has.

Hypnotherapy as a method to treat IBS, is backed by a growing amount of research. In September 2007, P J Whorwell, A Prior and S M Colgan announced their research findings in the British Medical Journal. An 18-month research of 50 sufferers with severe intractable irritable bowel showed hypnotherapy as an effective method to treat IBS. While just a quarter of sufferers over 50 responded to this treatment, one hundred per cent of those under 50 with a classical irritable bowel responded to hypnotherapy.

Using hypnosis can be daunting, however it gives an effective method of treating IBS and its symptoms naturally - without a risk of side effects. Most describe going under as a pleasing experience that leaves their mind tranquil, their body relaxed and their souls refreshed.

There are many stigmas attached to this therapy, perhaps due to its method of leaving a patient vulnerable. Most believe that they cannot be hypnotized and while it varies between people, seventy five per cent of people are able to enjoy all of the great benefits of this wonderful treatment.

While hypnotherapy can treat IBS, it is vital to remember that, as a medical complaint, a GP should be visited in the first instance for diagnosis and medical advice.
