What Is Qi Gong?
Imagine being able to heal yourself and others. That is exactly what is happening with an ancient healing art called Qigong. Finding its roots five thousand years ago in Chinese medicine and the marital arts, Qigong is becoming famous for promoting health. Qigong, or Chi Kung, is a healing art that involves a combination of flowing physical poses (forms) and controlled breathing patterns. It is often referred to as a moving meditation that is greatly enhanced with visualization techniques. In Chinese, Qi (Chi) means "life energy" or "breath", and gong means "discipline" or "cultivation." So Qigong is the art of breath work and the cultivation of vital energy. Not only is it very simple and easy to follow, but also it has tremendous health benefits.
History of Qigong or Chi Kung
When looking at the research, one can easily become confused about the birth of Qigong. Claims stretch as far back as the early dawn of the Chinese Empire, yet others say it was as recent as 475 A.D. While there seems to be evidence mentioning techniques and methods related to Qigong, little is known before the beginning of the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.) It was during this time that Buddhism and meditation were imported from India, and it is said that the Han Emperor himself became a devout Buddhist. Evidence seems to indict the first writing mentioning Qigong as a healing technique also appeared at this time.
Historically Qi gong was not available to the average lay person, kept in secrecy by Buddhist and Taoist monks being passed down through the monasteries. The Buddhist monks used it mainly as a way to help achieve spiritual enlightenment while the Taoist used it more as a physical ritual. In 475 A.D. a Buddhist monk named Da Mo was invited to China by the Emperor to preach Buddhism. After spending years in seclusion he wrote two books: Yi Jin Jing or Yi Gin Ching - Muscle/Tendon Changing and Xi Sui Jing (or Shii Soei Ching - Marrow/Brain Washing. These two books had a profound effect on the development of Qigong and his training methods were incorporated into the martial arts.
Chi Kung remained a closely-guarded state secret in China until the 20th century. During this time Qigong methods developed and many different styles emerged that are still in existence today. A little over 40 years ago Qigong was considered as superstition and its practitioners were persecuted. However, by 1989 much changed as medical Qigong became the official standard technique practiced in Chinese hospitals, and it is now part of their National Health Plan. In 2001 the Chinese government founded the Chinese Health Qigong Association to help study Qigong and expand its popularity. Today millions of people regularly practice Chi Kung as a preventive measure which has proven to be very effective. It has only been recently that Westerners have been somewhat receptive to essential energy healing techniques as we see Qi gong growing rapidly in popularity. I believe Qigong in the near future will experience a boom worlwide as we see people grow increasing disenchanted with the cost of Western medicine and the number of miracle healings with Qigong continue to increase.
How Does Qigong Work?
Everything is comprised of Qi including all matter right down to the atom and the molecule. Qi is referred to as the natural energy of the universe which enables us to do all things. According to the Chinese healing model, health is optimized when the body’s Qi is freely flowing. When it is not freely flowing, it becomes blocked, and we begin to experience pain, disease and other physical problems. A Qigong healer is able to detect where the Qi of a patient is stagnant and out of balance. Without touching the patient, the healer uses his hands to pass Qi directly into the patient releasing the blocked energy. It is this flowing balanced life energy that allows the body to heal itself.
